Beta
In the first stages of development Mario Kart 64 was known as “Super Mario Kart R”; presumably the “R” stood for Racing, and since the prequel was call “Super Mario Kart”, the name would be very understandable. Later it was named Mario Kart 64, reflecting its console, similar to the likes of Super Mario 64, StarFox 64 and Donkey Kong 64.
In Production
Before Mario Kart 64 was released it was called ‘Super Mario Kart R’. There are very few screenshots and information on this title.
Title Screen
This was originally the title screen of Mario Kart 64. As you can see Kamek appears instead of Donkey Kong. In addition, its titled ‘Super Mario Kart R’. The graphics don’t appear the same as Mario Kart 64. Source: Nintendo Power.
Character Select Screen
From the Character Screen you can see noticable differences. The fact that they are all facing forward and you can actually see the steering wheel. The biggest difference is Kamek who was later replaced by Donkey Kong. Kamek appeared in Yoshi Island for the Super Nintendo.
Mario Kart 64 Released
Now you’ve seen what Mario Kart 64 was supposed to be, now you can see the noticable differences between ‘Super Mario Kart R’ and its final result.
Title Screen
The scenario is familiar to the beta screen, but the graphics look a lot cleaner. The “Press Start” and “Copyright 1996 Nintendo” still look the same. Luigi and Kamek of course don’t appear on this screen, but are replaced by Peach and Toad. Again, it appears that the course is Mario Circuit in the background.
